Episode 120- Celebrating Life Day with Bruce Vilanch
It’s the holiday season and as 2020 comes to a close, we’re all trying to find a way to unwind after a rough year. Heidi and Captain are likely working on a choreographed tap-dance routine while Luke is probably watching fife and drum concerts over Zoom. All across the galaxy, everyone has their holiday traditions. And in a galaxy far, far away, they are celebrating Life Day.
If you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it. The Star Wars Holiday Special was something that only aired once, but it’s lived on in our collective minds for generations. George Lucas was so happy with it, he once said, “If I had time and a hammer, I’d track down every bootleg copy and smash it.”
So, with the holidays upon us, why not sit down with Bruce Vilanch, one of the writers on the show that dare not speak its name. We learned about all of the good intentions (and chemicals) that helped make a show that is indelibly seared onto our psyche.
Bea Arthur. Harvey Korman. Art Carney. Of course they’re part of Star Wars cannon. This is a show that will live on infamy.
This special is not for sale anywhere. (That’s how happy George was with the final product.) However, a quick google will turn up multiple links to watch this abomination. So, why not grab some power converters down at Toshi Station, pour yourself a holiday cocktail and try to enjoy this. And afterwards, listen to our conversation with Bruce to try to understand what happened.
We had a great time talking with Bruce and we’ll share the whole interview with you soon, but we couldn’t let another Life Day go by without talking this all through, like some sort of intensive therapy session.
Happy Holidays, wherever you are, and wishing a happy Life Day to all, and to all a good night.
