Episode 56- Audio Book Narrator Sean Pratt

Do you have your escape plan ready from the holiday drama just waiting to unfold with family members far and wide?

We suggest a riveting audio book perfect for popping in those brand-new air pods and transporting yourself to a world far away from it all.

If you take us up on our suggestion, which you should, chances are you’ll likely be read to by the legendary Sean Pratt. Narrator and voice coach extraordinaire, Sean has lent his voice to more than 1000 books to date.

His repertoire ranges from some of the greatest books of all time such as Infinite Jest or if you’re Heidi, Face the Music aka Paul Stanley’s autobiography. Yep, he narrated them both. In fact, the Starchild himself selected Sean to be the voice of his story.

We had a chance to catch up with Sean to learn what it’s like to be one of the most sought-after narrators around and what it’s like to read that many books aloud. How do you refrain from skipping to the end? How often do you find yourself exclaiming in the middle of you reading during a major plot twist? We asked him these important questions and more.

He began his career following a stint as an actor.  After some acting opportunities fell apart, he quickly established himself in the narration business. And the rest is, of course, history.

In the years that have followed, he’s helped countless others launch into the world of reading. In addition to his narrating, Sean spends a lot of time coaching others in how to navigate the industry and train their voices. Sean’s also an author. His book To Be or Wanna Be- The Top Ten Differences Between A Successful Actor and Starving Artist shares tips and behaviors for success and thriving rather than struggling when pursuing a career in the theatrical arts. The book is available on Amazon.

We found out what the secret to keeping those pipes silky smooth. Apparently, it’s lots of water, tea, Throat Coat and never ever raising his voice. He shared that even when his kids were little, he never raised his voice. At first it seems like that wouldn’t be effective when trying to ground munchkins who wrote on the wall for the 10th time. After thinking about it a little further, we agree that the calm, cool delivery was probably terrifying!

We, of course, had to try to get him to tell us what his favorite book he’s ever read has been. He wouldn’t pick a very favorite, but he shared a few that stand out. He also confessed that he prefers narrating non-fiction to novels, although he’s had great success with both.

Have a listen to this week’s episode. We can’t guarantee Luke or Heidi will behave any better than they usually do, but at least you know you’ll get to hear the soothing sound of Sean’s voice in every response to their jackassery. If you think you’d like to try narrating yourself and would like to enlist Sean’s assistance you can get in touch with him via his website here.
