Episode 32- Martha Wash

Rolling Stone heralded her as The Most Famous Unknown Singer of the ‘90s. VH-1 caught up with her as one of the Greatest One-Hit Wonders of all time on Where Are They Now?

Why? is taking it up a notch and proclaiming her one of the greatest voices to ever rock the airwaves, a mega songstress, game changer to the music business and one of the godmothers of body positivity. Yes, Heidi is fan girling yet again and frankly, Luke is too.

Martha Wash is still recording killer tunes, working with fellow disco divas, hosting a fantastic interview show, hanging out with RuPaul, being an advocate for the queer community and finding time to humor Luke and Heidi’s antics.

Still not sure who she is? You’ll know her the second you hear her. She’s gonna make you sweat as she proclaims, “Everybody Dance Now,” and your temperature is rising because, “It’s Raining Men, Hallelujah.” Yep, those epic songs are both her and if they aren’t on major rotation on your workout mix, they will be once you listen to her interview.

Martha was one of our all-time favorite people to talk to, not just because she’s famous. That just had us giddy leading up to the chat. She was warm, open, engaging and delightful. We didn’t want the conversation to end. Fortunately, our hosts kept it together before it got too awkward.

She shared with us the story of her rise to success. We talked about that moment of breaking it to her parents that she was using those powerful pipes for R&B, disco and pop instead of gospel. It’s pretty reminiscent of us saying, “So, we’re launching a podcast.”

She talked about her and her fellow Weather Girl Izora Rhodes-Armstead’s beginnings as part of Two Tons of Fun as back-up to the one and only Sylvester. Yes, of “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” fame. We learned how “It’s Raining Men” was born after it was passed up by so many other legendary songstresses and what exactly happened when she saw that C&C Music Factory video for the first time with someone else appearing to have sung that epic hook.

We talked about all the fantastic things she’s up to now and what else is on the horizon. Talking to Martha was entertaining, inspirational and a massive reminder of her storied career and why she’s approached life the way she has. If you’re someone feeling wronged or like the world is out to get you, you need to listen to Martha. She’ll perk up your day and show you all is good faster than any motivational book or app. She’ll teach you about forgiveness and loving who you are and most importantly, she’ll remind you to make that mega mix of all her hits past and present.
